ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FOOD SECTOR
Tecam in the food sector
The global food sector, which encompasses production and post-agricultural processes such as processing and distribution, is a key contributor to air pollutant emissions.
Food production is responsible for a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Tecam offers specific solutions for the treatment of emissions in this production sector.
Specific aspects of the sector and the environment
EAmong the most prominent groups of emerging food contaminants, those of industrial origin (perfluorinated compounds [PFCs], polybrominated biphenyls [PBBs] and, partly, nanomaterials) are of particular concern. Many of these may be associated with serious harm to human health. Other compounds have been associated with endocrine disrupting effects, or may accumulate and biomagnify through the food chain.

The production process and the environment
Contamination can occur at any of the following stages of the food value chain: production of raw materials, transport, food processing, cooking and baking, storage and distribution, food packaging and transport of packaged food.
Contaminants in the food sector
Food production contributes to climate change, eutrophication and acid rain, as well as the depletion of resources and biodiversity. It is also a considerable drain on other resources such as energy and water.
Food systems contribute 15 % of global greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect, the main environmental impacts due to the food and beverage industry are CO2 emissions, CFC emissions, smoke, strong odours, waste energy, wastewater, waste disposal, agricultural ecology, etc.
Also related to the food sector is packaging, which accounts for about 5 % of total waste generation in the EU. Packaging waste represents 17 % of solid municipal waste by weight and between 20 % and 30 % by volume. The food and drink industry is a major user of packaging and accounts for approximately two thirds of total EU packaging waste by weight.
