The mining sector alters the environment and its biodiversity (destruction of the earth’s crust, deep excavations), erosion, ground or surface water contamination, soil contamination (associated with fuel or chemical spills) and deforestation.

Hazardous chemicals and contaminated waste rock are disposed of in mining processes. These pollutants are often left behind at mine sites and can lead to acid rain.
In addition to the pollutants generated in the extraction processes, the different processes that follow the excavation itself must be taken into account. The industrial process changes depending on the product extracted and different pollutants are generated in each specific situation and case. For example, in the smelting of copper concentrate, high amounts of sulphur dioxide are emitted, which is treated to produce sulphuric acid. In the case of gold mining, cyanide solutions are used.
Pollutants in the mining sector
The most common pollutants generated by the extraction of ores and minerals are hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, potassium cyanide and cyanide acids, sodium carbonate, sulphur dioxide, coal tar, aluminium and zinc sulphates.
Mining industry installations also generate waste such as: end-of-life tyres, used lubricating oils, contaminated PPE, wood and construction waste, plastics and packaging, etc.
Dust is generated during extraction and there may be accidental spills of chemicals and fuels.
